Joe and Amanda Stroman are the founders of The Maci Foundation, Inc. The foundation is named in honor of their first daughter, Maci Rebekah, who was loss at week 17 of pregnancy in June of 2018.
Joe and I started dating in August 2016. After a truly fairytale romance, we married a year and half later in March of 2018. We spent our honeymoon in a lovely cabana on a private beach in Grand Cayman Island. It was a dream; the most magical, wonderful dream imaginable! And there, our love created a miracle! We came home pregnant with our first child. What joy!!
As the weeks progressed and my belly began to grow, I was excited beyond description! All checkups were normal, all genetic testing for abnormalities passed, and we were on our way to the birth of our first daughter, a girl, whom we’d named Maci, meaning “Gift from God.” We went in for our 17-week checkup feeling happy, gabbing all the way to the doctor's office, laughing and making plans to go visit my husband’s parents that afternoon. During the ultrasound, the technician became quiet, ended the exam, and then asked us to wait. I instinctively knew something was wrong and started to cry. Moments later the doctor informed us that our baby had no heartbeat. She’d died in the womb. We were devastated.
The weeks that followed were filled with sadness, confusion, mental torment, emotional pain, and spiritual unrest. Had I done something wrong? Did I eat something I shouldn’t have? Was I working too hard? Had I caused this? Was God angry with me? Was I being punished? Why had we lost our baby? It was a dark time. But in that darkness, God spoke to us about starting this foundation as a source of support for other women and couples going through the same devastation we faced. There were many things we desperately needed that but we didn't know who to ask or how. Many of those around us, though well-meaning, didn’t know how to effectively provide support.
We want to change that. We want to help create a path to healing for those who find themselves unexpectedly thrown onto this dark and fearful road. We want to leave breadcrumbs and road signs that point the way back to the light and life that can be found after such devastation.
We don’t want another woman or couple to go through pregnancy or infant loss without the support they need to heal. That’s it. It’s that simple. We just want to help.
